VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Freshman Ben Vasko (San Diego, Calif.) has been named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league announced Monday.

A 6-foot-3, 195-pound catcher, Vasko aided the Hawks to a 3-1 mark, which included an 8-3 victory over Atlantic 10 foe Temple.

He hit .778 (7-for-8) on the week with eight runs, five RBIs, one double and four walks. He also was perfect in the field, making 10 putouts and six assists with no errors. He gunned down the only baserunner attempting to steal on him as well.

Junior center fielder Phil Vaughn (Clinton, Md.) and sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Witte (Westminster, Md.) also earned Other Top Performer nods from the conference.

Vaughn batted .750 with six hits in eight at-bats. He scored three runs, drove in four and collected one double and four walks. He also swiped four bases to pull into a tie for first in the MEAC in the category with 26 on the season.

Witte threw six innings and allowed one run in the first game of a series with North Carolina Central Friday in Cary N.C. He struck out five and scattered six hits to improve to 3-4 for the year.

UMES (14-40) travels to Daytona Beach, Fla. for the MEAC Tournament, which opens Thursday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Seedings will be announced later this week.
