DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - University of Maryland Eastern Shore senior infielder Pat Hercinger (Papillion, Neb.) and sophomore designated hitter Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) were named to the All-MEAC Second Team Thursday at the league's awards banquet held at Jackie Robinson Ballpark Thursday.
One of the Hawks' three captains, Hercinger is hitting .291 in 51 games and a team-leading 211 plate appearances. He is second on the team with 29 runs scored, 52 hits and 23 walks. Hercinger is also third in total bases (65) and tied for third in home runs with one. He also boasts the team's second best hitting streak of the season of 10 games.
"I'm very proud of Pat," said UMES head coach Will Gardner. "He has certainly worked hard for this honor and it is a fitting tribute to his work ethic and leadership skills."
Chaikowsky earned a second-team nod after being sidelined for all of 2008 due to a shoulder injury. He is third in the conference in batting average at .382 and is tops on the team in doubles (11), slugging percentage (.617) and on-base percentage (.485).
He is second on the team in RBIs (28) and total bases (66) and is tied for second with two home runs and 10 stolen bases. He has 13 multiple-hit games and seven multiple-RBI games.
"Bryan really came on for us the second half of the year," said Gardner. "He has really been the catalyst for our success, heading into the tournament. We are ecstatic to have him back for two more years as his best seasons are in front of him."
Delaware State third baseman Ross Babineaux was named the MEAC Player of the Year while teammate Dan Perkins was selected as Pitcher of the Year at the banquet. Bethune-Cookman pitcher Ali Simpson was named Rookie of the Year and head coach Mervyl Melendez of B-CU earned Coach of the Year honors.
All awards were voted on by the conference's head baseball coaches and sports information directors.
The Hawks finished the regular season 14-40 overall and 9-9 in conference to capture the No. 4 seed in the tournament. UMES faces third-seeded Florida A&M 22-27, 10-8) in a first round game Thursday at 6 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
