June 1, 2005 PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The post-season honors continue to mount for senior Brandon McCabe and junior Craig Munch as they were both named to the Black College Baseball Elite Second Team. McCabe and Munch were also both named to the All-MEAC second team before the start of the 2005 MEAC baseball tournament. "I am very proud of both Brandon and Craig and all of their individual accomplishments on the field. They deserve all the honors, because they went out every day and performed," said UMES Head Coach Bobby Rodriguez. "Both Brandon and Craig are tremendous talents and have the chance of making a career in baseball. This is just the beginning for them."
McCabe finished the season as the team leader with a .363 batting average, a .436 on-base percentage, and a .625 slugging percentage. He also led the team with 16 doubles, eight homeruns, and 100 total bases. He also drove in 33 runs and scored 23. McCabe finished the season very strong as he attempted to lead the Fighting Hawks to a MEAC title as he went 5-8 in the postseason tournament. He scored three runs and drove in three with two monster homeruns.
Munch, who missed the final week of regular season games due to illness, finished the season batting .347 with 17 runs scored and a team-high 34 RBI's. Over his last 18 regular season games he was hitting .409 as he collected 21 hits, including three homeruns, two triples, two doubles. When he finally returned from his time off, Munch picked up right where he left off as he went 5-7 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and four RBI in the MEAC baseball tournament in Orlando, Florida. Munch had a career afternoon against Savannah State earlier in the season in which he hit two homeruns and a double, while collecting seven RBI's in a 13-9 victory.
Both Munch and McCabe are currently in the process of working out for major league scouts and are hoping to have their names called next week as Major League Baseball holds its annual player draft.
