Salisbury, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Baseball Team gave a hand this past weekend the Ryan Long Memorial Festival Clinic, held in conjunction with the 2nd Annual Sports Card and Collectible Charity Festival benefiting the Ryan Long Memorial Scholarship.

The festival, held at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, home of the Delmarva Shorebirds, saw pitching coach Bob Janeski and Hawk catcher Butch Mills lend their knowledge to the youth attending the clinic.

"It was a great event that I was glad we could help out with," said Head Coach Bobby Rodriguez. "Our pitching coach and players volunteered their time to help make the event a success," he added. "We want to be active in the community and will help however we can."

This was the first year for the clinic but the second for the festival, which benefits the Delmar Kiwanis Children's Scholarship Fund and the Ryan Long Memorial Scholarship Fund, in memory of 1999 Seaford High School graduate Ryan Long, a U.S. Army Spc. who was killed in Iraq in April 2003. The Delmarva Shorebirds, the Kiwanis Club of Delmar and MWS Charity Promotions sponsored the event. The festival bridged sports memorabilia, fun and entertainment for both adults and children and community awareness with scholarship fund-raising.

"We really wanted to make it something for everyone. That was our goal, to bring not just sports fans but to bring families out, and to let them know that there are people who care about wanting to do good for the community," said co-organizer Scott Massari. "This was our way of saying we can benefit the scholarships but also try to bring people in the community together for a fun day. Ryan gave his life for our country, and this is a way for us to give something back."
