UMES ANNOUNCES BROADCAST TEAM FOR 2013-2014 SEASON

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletics Department is pleased to announce a new addition to the broadcast crew for the upcoming season. Doug Newton will join Bret Lasky and David Byrd to bring fans all of the action on the Hawks Radio Network.
Newton will serve as the play-by-play announcer for UMES women’s basketball, volleyball and baseball. In addition his play-by-play duties, Newton will assist with men’s basketball broadcasts during conference play.
Newton comes to UMES after spending the last two years in minor league baseball, most recently in Clinton, Iowa. He served as the Broadcasting and Media Relations Assistant for the Clinton LumberKings, the Class-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners in the Midwest League. During the 2012 season, Newton worked in a similar capacity with the Aberdeen IronBirds, the Short Season-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.
College athletics is familiar territory for Newton. The Baltimore native has called basketball on a fill-in basis for local Maryland schools, Mount St. Mary’s University and McDaniel College. Newton graduated from Princeton University in 2012, broadcasting football, men’s and women’s basketball for the student radio station, WPRB.
Bret Lasky returns as the play-by-play voice of Hawks basketball for his fifth season. Lasky is the Director of Broadcasting and Graphic Design for the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Class-A minor league baseball affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.
David Byrd is back for his tenth consecutive season as the UMES color analyst, giving commentary for all home and select road games. Coach Byrd is the athletic director and former men’s basketball coach of nearby Pocomoke High School. Byrd is one of the winningest coaches in Maryland high school history, having led his team to a state championship in 2002.
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore will continue its partnership with SFMSports.Net and expand its coverage for the 2013-2014 season. All men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and baseball games can be heard online at Hawks Radio Network homepage. In addition to audio for all games, streaming video will be available on SFMSports.Net for all home basketball and volleyball contests.
Hawks men’s basketball will air on WAMS-FM 101.1 in Snow Hill and WQMR-AM 1590 in Ocean City, plus select games will air in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. markets.
The first broadcast will be on Friday, September 27th as the volleyball team plays host to Delaware State to open its conference slate. Women’s basketball starts on Friday, November 8th when Lady Hawks basketball hosts USC-Upstate. Men’s basketball begins on Saturday, November 9th when UMES travels to face Columbia University.
