Oct. 25, 2011
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Last Saturday, the current Hawks and previous University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) players went to the diamond to play in the Alumni game at Hawks Stadium. The competitive game on a beautiful day in Princess Anne ended with a 6-3 win for the current Hawks.
Some new Hawks saw action during the weekend, helping the Alumni with pitching. This included freshman Jordan Bone (Pittston, Pa.), who pitched three innings with just one allowed, and Josue Cintron (Garnersville, N.Y.), notching two innings of scoreless relief.
For the current Hawks side, newcomers Devin Repine (Salisbury, Md.), Michael Epps (Pottstown, Pa.), Alex Welch (Baltimore, Md.) and Chipper Smith (Florence, S.C.) combined to throw seven innings, allowing just one run.
"The freshmen have set the stage, "coach Will Gardner said. "Now it's up to the rest of us to meet them halfway and do some more interesting things as we move forward into the season."
The Alumni team was led by Faheem Hammett, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Charles Pickard got a hit and an RBI. Luis Mena also hit safely while Phil Vaughn and Paul Ash each scored a run.
UMES is set to begin their season on Friday, February 17th with a three-game series with Gardner-Webb on the road.
