PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Behind the clutch hitting of Brian Laird, Faheem Hamett, and Brandon McCabe, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball Alumni Team defeated the 2010 Hawks, 11-9, at Hawks Stadium on Nov. 2.
The game started out as a continuation of last year's no-hit romp with the current Hawks' UMES pitching dominating the elder bats.
Then their bats came alive as the Hawks jumped on top with five unanswered runs. However, the Alumni quickly made their own statement in the top of the third as they began to tap into that early lead by closing the gap to 5-4.
The Hawks tried to separate themselves from the Alumni over the next three innings, but the elder Hawks did not go quietly.
In the top of the seventh, the Alumni fought their way to tie the contest at 8-8. The Alumni used solid defense to hold the current Hawks at bay and made the most of their opportunities in the top of the eighth.
The Alumni scored three more to make for the final margin.
Prior to the game, former Hawk first baseman McCabe, put on a fireworks display by ripping through the competition to claim the first Home Run Derby crown.
"There was a variety of older and newer alums on the field," said UMES head coach Will Gardner. "It was really special to see the interaction between not just former and current players but also the indoctrination of the new set of Hawk Alums into the fold. We'd really like to see this event get a lot bigger where it becomes a multi-day event." Hopefully, that will come sooner than later."
