Bert DeSalvo is in his first year as an assistant coach for the Hawks. DeSalvo is responsible for film exchange, budgeting, on the floor coaching, post and perimeter player development, scouting reports, travel coordination and recruiting mailings among other duties.

"I would like to thank Coach Lessett for adding me to his staff and am excited to become a part of the Hawk family," said DeSalvo. "I look forward to helping UMES climb to the top of the MEAC and I will work tirelessly to ensure the success of the program."

He comes to UMES after serving one year as the Girls' Varsity Head Coach at Chariho High School in Rhode Island. At Chariho, DeSalvo led the Chargers to a playoff appearance in 2004-2005. Despite key injuries to several starters, the Chargers finished with an 11-14 overall record. Also during the season, star point guard, Allegra Lovoy (Salve Regina University), whom DeSalvo had coached at the AAU level for several years, set the school's all-time scoring record (boys or girls) with 1634 career points.

From 2001-04, DeSalvo was the Boys' Junior Varsity Head Coach/Asst. Varsity Coach at South Kingstown High School (R.I.), leading his team to a co-division championship in 2001-'02. DeSalvo has also coached at Rocky Hill Middle School (East Greenwich, R.I.) from 1998-2001 and for several boys and girls AAU teams and high school summer leagues in Rhode Island over the past eight seasons.

DeSalvo has gained valuable experience working at basketball camps throughout the east coast. Clemson University, the University of Rhode Island, and the University of Maryland are some of the camps he has had the privilege to work at over the past years. While at camp DeSalvo has gained insight from top coaches around the country, such as Clemson Head Coach Oliver Purnell, URI Head Coach Jim Baron, Former Coastal Carolina Head Coach Pete Strickland, Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams and many others.

DeSalvo received a Batchelor's degree in History from the University of Rhode Island, graduating cum laude in May 2002.

He is currently pursuing his Master's degree in Education in the Guidance and Counseling program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
