Kevin Jones enters his first season as Assistant Coach at UMES. Jones is no stranger to the game of basketball. Recently, Jones served as the CEO of National Talent Scouting Service where he evaluated high school and junior college talent nationally, acted as liaison between college coaches and players regarding recruitment, and conducted skill camps and clinics displaying prospective student-athletes.
Prior to his arrival at UMES, Jones served one season as the Assistant Coach/Director of Player Development at Texas Southern University (2008). He was responsible for the entire player's development through individual workouts and strengthen & conditioning along with governing all NCAA compliance forms.
Prior to Texas Southern, Jones was the Chicago State University (CSU) Men's Head Basketball Coach nearly five seasons (2003-07) after replacing Bo Ellis in early January 2003. Jones coached the final 12 games of the season before being named CSU's 10th men's head basketball coach in April 2003.
During his tenure at CSU, Jones took over a program with one of the lowest winning percentages in college basketball. Jones quickly reversed the trend and made the Cougars a respectable program by winning the Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year Award in his first full-season as head coach. In his first season, Jones would win nearly 60% of the games while going 9-7 in conference play. The 9-7 mark was the school's first-ever winning season in the conference since joining the league in 1994. In 2006, Jones would eventually take the program to the Mid-Continent Conference Championship game. Jones left CSU as the school's winningest coach in their Division I history.
Prior to becoming CSU's head coach, Jones was an assistant coach under Coach Ellis before taking over. Before his tenure at CSU, Jones was the Boy's Head Coach for Moron Memorial High School in Knightstown, IN. Prior to that, Jones spent seven seasons (1994-2001) as the Associate Head Coach for Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Prior to IUPUI, Jones served as an Assistant Coach at Western Illinois for five seasons (1989-1994). Jones began his coaching career at Lincoln College where he served as an Assistant Coach for the Lynx (1987-1989).
A 1987 Eastern Illinois graduate, Jones has spent 18 seasons of being in the Mid-Continent Conference as either a player or coach. Jones was a two-year letter winner for the Panthers (1981-1983). At Eastern Illinois, he was a member of the Mid-Con Conference during Jones playing days. As a senior, Jones was named the Team's Most Valuable Player (MVP). Prior to playing at Eastern Illinois, Jones was a two-time NCAA All-American at Kankakee Community College (CC). Jones also served as the U.S. Marine Corps Head Basketball Coach at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina (1983-1986).
