Jan. 2, 2010 Final Stats | Video: Shootaround in Nebraska LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team was down by just four points at halftime, but second half efforts were not enough as the Nebraska Cornhuskers held on strong to defeat the Hawks, 74-60, in front of 8,482 at the Devaney Center Saturday afternoon. Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led all scorers with 18 points in 30 minutes of play on 8-for-17 from the floor (1-for-6 from behind the arc). He added four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Redshirt junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) chipped in 10 points of his own on 5-for-13 shooting and grabbed five rebounds, one assist and one steal in 39 minutes of play. Freshman Sean Berry (Irvington, N.J.) led both teams in rebounds with eight and junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished out seven assists. The Hawks fall to 3-9 on the season while the Huskers improved to 11-3. Nebraska lead at the halftime break, 30-26, before UMES was able to cut the lead to a single point on a 3-pointer from Haley. That was as close as the Hawks would get, however, as the Huskers rattled off 13 unanswered points over the next four minutes. A 3-pointer by Nebraska's Eshaunte Jones capped the run, placing the Cornhuskers ahead, 43-29. "I thought we did some good things in the first half, except we had too many missed opportunities," said UMES head coach Frankie Allen. "We had some shots down there in the paint, point-blank range. We have to finish those shots and we didn't." Eleven of the 20 UMES turnovers came in the second half, helping Nebraska pad their lead. NU lead by as many as 23 with under four minutes to play after a Myles Holley jumper.
The Hawks would finish strong, outscoring the Cornhuskers, 16-7, over the final 3:25. The first half was competitive, with four ties and three lead changes. A steal by White lead to a Burns lay-up, which opened the scoring in the game's first minute. UMES scored eight fast break points in the first half. A jumper by Haley with just over eight minutes gone by briefly put the Hawks ahead, 17-15. UMES shot 11-30 (36.7 %) over the first 20 minutes. Berry led a strong UMES effort on the backboard, as the Hawks outrebounded the Cornhuskers, 40-32. "I was pleased with our rebounding effort against a Big-XII team," said Allen. "Hopefully this is something we can build upon for our next game." Ryan Anderson led Nebraska in scoring with 17 points. Jones led the team with four rebounds. The Hawks return to action on Monday night at Oklahoma, with tipoff at 8 p.m. EST. |
