BULLDOGS STEAL HEARTBREAKER FROM HAWKS, 71-69
Jan. 8, 2011
ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team led for the majority of the game and at one point took a lead of 10, but a buzzer beating layup by South Carolina State's Brandon Riley stole the game for the Bulldogs, 71-69, at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center Saturday night.
The Hawks led for the entire second half until the Bulldogs sank three free throws to tie (at the 1:02 mark) and then take the lead, 69-67 with 14 seconds remaining. UMES tied the game with eight seconds on the clock with a layup by senior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) before Riley drove the length of the court to hit a layup as time expired.
"This is definitely a tough loss as we had this game," said head coach Frankie Allen. "We certainly had our chances but they just hung around the entire game and we couldn't finish them out."
For the fifth straight game the Hawks were lead in scoring by redshirt junior Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.), who had a game-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. He also tallied a game-high nine rebounds (eight defensive).
Within the first six minutes, the Bulldogs took an 11-6 lead before Haley shot a 3-pointer that bounced around on the rim for a few second before deciding to fall in at the 13:39 mark.
Freshman Louis Bell (Washington, D.C.) tied the game at 14-all three minutes later with his own trey. Less than a minute later, senior Freddy Obame Obame (Libreville, Gabon) took the lead for UMES with a layup.
The Hawks then made an 8-0 run over the next six-plus minutes to make the score 16-18 with three minutes left in the half.
Redshirt sophomore Mark Robertson (Lakewood, N.J.) hit a three with a minute left and UMES finished the half up, 29-23.
Coming out of the half, the Hawks took a 10-point lead at 33-23 with another 3-pointer from Bell. SCSU slowly crept back before Haley stole the ball from Darnell Porter and drove the length of the court to slam home a dunk at 12:56 to swing the momentum towards UMES at 41-34.
With under 10 minutes remaining re-took a 10-point lead at 52-42 off of a 3-point play from Obame Obame. Once again, the Bulldogs slowly chipped away at the Hawks' lead and would come within two with 4:53 left on the clock.
With 3:11 left in the game, Bradshaw hit a long shot from behind the arc as the shot clock expired to make things 62-55 in favor of UMES.
Over the final three minutes, SCSU outscored the Hawks 11-7 and made six free throws to take the game.
With the loss, UMES falls to 3-11 overall and 0-2 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Bulldogs improve to 5-9 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Porter scored a team-high 14 points for SCSU. Presano Bell contributed 13 points of his own while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.
The Hawks wrap up their two game trip to the Carolinas by facing North Carolina Central on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
