NORFOLK, VA. Junior Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md.) scored a career high 19 points against Norfolk State (NSU) on Monday, but it was not enough as the Hawks fell in a 12 point decision at Echols Hall, 74-62. McMillion's 19 points led UMES (4-10, 1-3 MEAC) while reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week Troy Jackson (Wilkes Barre, Pa.) added 15 points. Senior Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill.) pulled down a game high 12 rebounds. Calvin Brown and Tony Murphy scored 12 points apiece to lead the Spartans (4-10, 3-1 MEAC), while Tynell Dunkley and Larry Vickers added 10 each. The Hawks scored just 18 points in the first half and didn't get their first point until Jackson hit a free-throw at 10:37. A jumper by Casey Gordon gave NSU their largest lead of the night, a 26 point advantage, with 1:42 left in the half. The Spartans went into the locker room with a 25 point lead as they held UMES to 23% field goal shooting in the first period. The Hawks got on track in the second half, however, as they scored 44 points and shot 49% from the field. UMES also held NSU to nine second-half field goals and outscored the Spartans 18-16 in the paint. McMillion, who had all 19 of his points in the second period, scored 16 of the Hawks' 23 points to start the second half. A jumper by Jackson with 17 seconds left cut the NSU lead to 12 but it was too little too late as the Spartans walked away with the 74-62 victory. UMES is off for a week, next playing on Monday, January 16 in a home decision against Delaware State. The contest, which will be televised live on ESPNU, will kick off at 2 p.m.
