WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) could not overcome pressure defense and an efficient run offense by Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) on their way to a 105-59 loss on Saturday night in the LJVM Coliseum.

UMES (2-13) fell behind early on a Jamal Durham lay-in that gave the Rams a 14-5 lead just over three minutes into the game.

WSSU (6-7) never looked back as they used a nine point run capped by another Durham lay-in that brought the score to 27-9 with 11:20 remaining in the first half.

The Rams went into the locker room with a commanding 49-28 lead after an Isiah Tucker lay-in matched their biggest lead of the half. WSSU found their rhythm early on as they shot an impressive 52.5 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from three-point range, while holding the Hawks to 37.1 percent from the floor and 10 percent beyond the arc in the first half.

Unfortunately for the Hawks they did not fare much better in the second half as the Rams continued to poor in the points on their way to 100, which came with 1:30 left in the game on a Alcius McIntoche lay-in. UMES previously allowed 100 point games to West Virginia and Wagner. WSSU would lead by as many as 48 before finishing with the 46 point win.

Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) the only Hawk to finish in double figures led the offensive attack with 21 points and eight rebounds despite finishing only eight-of-26 from the field and two-of-nine from three-point range. Marc Davis (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) added nine points, while Gary Lee (Flint, Mich./Northwestern University) finished his UMES debut with eight points off the bench.

Leading the way for WSSU was Durham who finished with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting to go along with eight rebounds. Darrell Wonge added 18 points and nine rebounds, while Tucker and Brian Fisher chipped in with 16 and 12 respectively as they tied for a game-high six assists.

The Hawks were out rebounded by the Rams, 48-31, which included a game-high 12 rebounds from Paul Davis. WSSU also outscored UMES in the paint, 54-34, had more points off turnovers, 24-4, and had more second chance points, 21-7. WSSU finished 42-of-76 from the field for 55.3 percent and 38.5 percent from three-point range. Meanwhile, UMES shot a respectable 38.8 percent from the floor but made only three-of-20 from beyond the arc for a meager 15 percent.

UMES will look to end a four-game skid as they wrap-up their Carolina road trip when they travel to Orangeburg, S.C. for their second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game of the season against South Carolina State on Monday, January 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 E.T. and can be heard on WTGM-AM 960 The Team or live on the internet at www.umeshawks.com.
