PRINCESS ANNE, MD. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawks lost their third game in a row Monday night as they dropped a nationally televised contest on ESPNU to Delaware State (DSU), 70-67, in a home decision at the Hytche Center. Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook) scored a career high 19 points on 7-11 shooting to lead UMES (4-11, 1-4 MEAC) while Troy Jackson (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Laurinburg Prep) added 18 points off the bench on 7-14 shooting from the field. Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md./Notre Dame Prep) chipped in with a season high 13 points. Joe Dickens' 20 points led DSU (7-10, 5-0 MEAC) as the Hornets remained undefeated in conference play. Jahsha Bluntt had 17 points on 6-8 shooting, while Tracey Worley added 15. Delaware State took a 31-13 lead at the half and held the Hawks to just four field goals in the first period. The Hawks didn't score their first points of the game until 10:27, when Jackson hit a jumper to end the UMES drought. Bluntt had 13 points at the half to pace the Hornets. Hagay Barav's (Hertzliya, Israel) five points led the Hawks. The second half featured a different maroon and gray squad as UMES jumped out to a 22-7 run to open the gates. Jackson hit a trey at 10:33 to cut the lead to five, and Tyson's three-pointer at 7:01 closed the Hawks to within three. However the DSU lead ballooned back to double-digits with just under four minutes remaining as Darrin Shine hit a pair of free-throws to give the Hornets a ten-point lead. Jackson hit another trey at 2:29 to cut the Delaware State lead down to five but it would not be enough as DSU connected on four free-throws in the final two minutes to seal the Hornet win.
The Hawks are off until this weekend, next facing off against Florida A&M in a road contest on Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. |
