Norfolk, VA - Norfolk State started the game on a 23-3 run, and the Spartans shot a season-high 57 percent from the floor en route to a 67-54 win over visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall, moving NSU to 3-3 in the MEAC.

Chakowby Hicks scored 20 points and Derrick Smith 17 for the Spartans, who did not allow UMES (1-11, 1-4 MEAC) to make a field goal until Tee Trotter's 3-pointer with 7:08 left in the first half. UMES trailed 34-19 at the break.

Still, the Hawks stayed close in the second half as NSU committed 19 turnovers and made just 6 of its 15 free throws for the game. UMES, meanwhile, made 16 of 22 free throws, and Trotter had a game-high 25 points (4-5 3-point attempts) to keep the Hawks in the game.

UMES cut its deficit to 47-39 on two free throws by DeWitt Scott with 10:27 remaining, but the Spartans went on a 9-0 run to go back ahead by a comfortable margin.

Hicks made 9 of his 13 field goal attempts and also had five steals for NSU, which improved to 4-11, 3-3 in the MEAC. Ryan Grier (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) added 12 points, and Nicholas Byrd (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell) had team highs of six rebounds and six assists.

Scott had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Hawks. UMES returns to action Monday night in another MEAC contest at Hampton University beginning at 8:00 p.m.
