PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The UMES men's basketball team put three players in double figures and connected on 51% percent of its field goals en route to an 88-64 win over Shenandoah in non-conference game on Wednesday at the Hytche Center. The win ended a six-game losing streak for the Hawks, who improved to 3-14 overall. The loss was the third straight for the Hornets, who fall to 6-8. "This was a good win for us, "said UMES head coach Larry Lessett. "We had some good individual performances and we hope to carry the momentum into Saturday's game against Florida A&M." UMES led from start to finish and after taking a 12-point lead at 15-3 on a trey from senior guard Corey Brown (Richmond, Va./Mott C.C.) at 13:46, never saw their lead fall below double digits. Brown tied his career-high with 30 points on 11-for-16 shooting from the field. Sophomore Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) had 21 points and seven rebounds while Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown H.S.) added 16 points and eight boards. Freshman Milutin Mirjacic (Uzice, Serbia/Uzice Economic School) chipped in with a game high four steals on the defensive end. Shenandoah got a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds from Jeremiah Lawrence. Mouktar Fawehinmi contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds. The maroon and gray had come out on fire in the first half, hitting three of its first six baskets and taking a 6-0 lead on a Mirjacic layup. The Hornets got on board with a layup from Lawrence, but UMES used a 15-1 run over a span of 6:50 and widened its gap to 18 points, 21-3, on a jumper from McMillion with 10:57 to play in the half. A dunk by Aleksandar Popovic (Novi Sad, Serbia/Weatherford College) gave the Hawks a 23-point lead, 49-26, at the break.
Brown's 3-pointer at 19:06 in the second half gave UMES a 27-point lead, its largest of the night. Jumpers by Fawehinmi and Lenzie Adams closed Shenandoah within 17 points but that is the closest they would get. UMES does not get much time to rest, hosting MEAC rival Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon at the Hytche Center. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. |
