TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshman Sean Berry (Irvington, N.J.) registered his second double-double of the season and his career as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball defeated Florida A&M University, 67-51, at the Al Lawson Center Saturday night.

Berry scored 10 and grabbed 11 rebounds in 24 minutes of play. Three other Hawks tallied in double digits with senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) scoring 15 and juniors Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) and Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each had 12.

The win was the first for the Hawks on the road this season and their first since December 9, 2009, when they defeated Navy at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center. UMES had not won a conference road game since March 3, 2007 at Howard. Additionally, the Hawks had lost eight straight in Tallahassee.

"We got off to a good lead and that was very important," said head coach Frankie Allen. "We had a couple of rough spots, but we made big plays when we had to. It's a good feeling [to get the win], we really needed to get off of this slide."

UMES got off to a quick start, leading 11-4 going into the first media timeout of the game. Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) knocked down a 3-pointer at the 11:22 mark, to continue his streak of making a 3-pointer in every game this season.

A jumper by Pitt put the Hawks up by 16 at 24-8, with just under 10 minutes left in the half. A missed basket by Burns turned into a rebounded tip-in by Berry to make things 28-12. Free throws by Pitt put UMES up by 20, their largest lead of the game.

The Rattlers pulled the game within 13 at 33-20 with a layup by Amin Stevens at the buzzer going into half time.

The Hawks started the second half slow and frustrations were high as UMES had a difficult time breaking the full-court press put on by FAMU and in turn produced numerous turnovers. The Hawks also registered numerous fouls and went into the bonus, just five minutes into the half.

After two free throws by Pitt and a basket by White, the Rattlers went on a 14-0 run to bring the score to 37-34 at the 15:04 mark. FAMU would get within two with a layup by Christopher Walker at the 13:37 mark.

Berry left the game at 12:19 with a right ankle injury, but later returned.

Haley powered in a layup from the right side and was fouled to make a 3-point play to put UMES at 51-41.

The Hawks scored the final nine points of the game, going 9-for-9 from the free throw line within the closing two minutes. Their last field goal of the game came with a basket by White at the 3:23 mark.

"The win shows that all the hard work that we put in in practice is really starting to pay off," said Burns. "The guys are all coming together and we're doing a good job."

UMES continues their Florida trip with a matchup against Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach on Monday with tip at 4 p.m.
