TALLAHASSEE, FL The UMES Fighting Hawks fell in a close overtime decision to the FAMU Rattlers Saturday evening. The Hawks fell by four points, 96-92, in a road decision at Gaither Gym.

UMES (4-12, 1-5 MEAC) had a balanced effort as five players scored in double-digures. Troy Jackson led the way with 22 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Ed Tyson added 17 points and Jesse Brooks chipped in with 16, while Tim Parham added a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Antonio McMillion finished with 13 points to round out the Hawks effort.

Tyson had a game high three steals while Brooks added his game high of eight assists.

FAMU (9-9, 5-2 MEAC) got 26 points from Tony Tate. Joe Ballard had 18, while Rome Sanders and Jonathan Kelly finished with 17 and 10, respectively.

Saturday's bout was a thriller with eight lead changes and 15 tie scores during the evening, as the visiting Hawks came in determined to end their six-game losing streak against FAMU.

UMES made clutch shots early to grab a 44-41 lead at the break, before vaulting to a nine-point cushion, 52-43 with 17:09 left in regulation.

A free throw by Sanders with 2:51 left in regulation gave FAMU a short-lived 77-76 lead, before McMillion's jumper with 2:31 left put the Hawks back in front, 78-77.

Tate's jumper put FAMU ahead, 79-78 with 2:06 to play, but Jackson's clutch three-pointer with the shot clock winding down, vaulted the Hawks back in front, 81-79 with 1:36 left.

The two schools traded layups in a 26-second span - one by Sanders with 52 seconds to play and one by Parham with 26 ticks - to keep the Hawks ahead, 83-81.

Tate's layup with 10 seconds left tied the score at 83-83, but overtime was assured when Brooks missed a potential game-winning three-pointer with two seconds left in regulation.

 

 

The extra period see-sawed back and forth, with three ties and three lead changes. However, Tate's three-pointer with 32 seconds left, put FAMU ahead to stay, 94-92, with Ballard adding a pair of charity tosses for a 96-92 cushion with four seconds left.

The Hawks will face off with Bethune-Cookman in their next decision, traveling to Daytona Beach, FL for their contest against the Wildcats on Monday, January 23.
