PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) continued to struggle from the field converting only 27.1 percent, while Norfolk State University (NSU) connected on 54.5 percent of their shots to take an 84-65 win on Monday night in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. UMES (2-16, 0-3 MEAC) could not pick up their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win of the season and in doing so lost their seventh straight game. Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) led all scorers with 34 points on six-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc. He finished three points shy of tying a career-high and just two short of matching a season-high, but did tie one career record with three steals. NSU (7-9, 4-1 MEAC) opened the game up scoring eight straight points that was capped off by a Brandon Monroe lay-in. The Spartans never looked back as they extended their lead to as many as 17 in the first half on a Michael Deloach jumper with 7:17 remaining. The Hawks would trim the lead to 10 on a Tyson three-pointer but a Monroe dunk on the ensuing play would give the Spartans a 44-32 lead at the break. The first half featured a shooting display by NSU as they finished 60 percent from the field and 48 percent from three-point range, whereas, UMES shot just 28.1 percent from the floor and 26.3 percent from beyond the arc. In addition, the Hawks were outrebounded, 28-12, and outscored in the paint, 20-6, in the first 20 minutes of action. Tyson would bring the Hawks to within seven, 44-37, on a three-pointer that capped a five point run to start the second half. Unfortunately for UMES, any chance of a comeback was quickly put to rest as the Spartans would go on a 17-2 run over the next five minutes to take a commanding 61-39 lead, their largest of the game, that ended with a Deloach three-pointer. Joining Tyson in double figures for the Hawks were Denzel Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa./Lincoln H.S.) and Ishmawiyl McFadden (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz H.S.) who added 11 points apiece. Jackson also had nine rebounds and four steals, both game-highs. The Spartans were led offensively by Tony Murphy who scored 20 points, all in the first half, on four-of-seven shooting from beyond the arc, while adding five rebounds and three assists in just 18 minutes of action. Deloach and Corey Lyons were the other two NSU players to finish in double digits with 19 and 18 respectively. For the game, UMES was outrebounded by NSU, 52-32, and outscored in the paint, 28-16, however; they did commit 15 fewer turnovers and score 15 more points off them. NSU also outshot the Hawks from three-point range (41.2-34.8 percent) and the free-throw line (85-67.9 percent). UMES will now travel to Hanover, N.H. for a match-up against Dartmouth on Wednesday, January 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 E.T. and can be heard on WTGM-AM 960 The Team or live on the internet at www.umeshawks.com.
