PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The Morgan State Bears defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawks, 80-60, dropping the Hawks to 1-15 overall and 0-7 in conference play.

UMES (1-15, 0-7 MEAC) kept the game close in the first half, keeping the Morgan State (6-11, 4-3 MEAC) lead under double digits for the duration of the period. The Bears jumped out to a 12 point advantage, taking a 16-4 lead at 15:04 off of a three point basket by Karanvir Aujla. But the Hawks answered back, with Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill/Ellsworth CC) hitting a lay-up at 11:00 to cut the Morgan State advantage to seven points.

Parham, who had a game high 11 points at halftime, hit another lay-up to cut the Morgan State lead to five with just over six minutes left in the half. The Bears responded by playing good defense and forcing seven UMES turnovers in the last four minutes en route to a 16-7 run to end the period. Morgan State went into the locker room with the advantage, taking a 14 point lead over the Hawks, 40-26.

UMES was led by Parham's 11 points and six rebounds at the half. Sam Brand scored 10 to pace Morgan State.

The Hawks started the half on a mini run, outscoring the Bears 9-4 to close within eight points at 16:09. Morgan State forced eight UMES turnovers in the next few minutes, pushing their lead over the Hawks to 27 points at 10:16. During that run the Bears forced three fouls and outscored UMES 19-0, holding the Hawks scoreless for six minutes.

A trey by Corey Brown (Ruthville, VA/Mott CC) cut the Bear advantage to 20 at 6:21 and another three pointer at 1:37 by Ryan Leak (Jamaica, NY/Bayside) shortened the Morgan State lead to 19 but it was not enough, as the Bears took home an 80-60 victory over UMES.

Parham finished with his fifth double-double in seven games, tallying a game high 20 points and 12 rebounds. Brown added 15 points and three assists, while Leak had nine points in the loss. Timothy Berkley scored 16 to lead Morgan State.

 

 

The Hawks play will play their next contest at home, facing off against Coppin State on Wednesday, January 26. Tip off is slated for 7:30pm.
