Greensboro, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men traveled south to Aggie Country taking on the Blue & Gold of North Carolina A & T State University (NCAT) in an afternoon battle in the newly renovated Corbett Sports Center. The Fighting Hawks battled the snow and ice but couldn't top the Aggies as they fell by a score of 74-59. UMES (1-17, 0-9 MEAC) had a solid performance again from junior forward Tim Parham who recorded his seventh double double in the last nine games with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Corey Brown was the game's co-leading scorer notching 16 points, the same as the Aggie's Sean Booker. The Hawks won the battle of the boards, outboarding the Aggies 41-32. That stat was mostly the inspired play of Parham and Jareem Dowling who had 11 rebounds also. Unfortunately turnovers again bothered UMES as they committed 26 to the Aggie's 11. NCAT got ten steals off of the Hawks. Anthony Davis pitched in a career high nine points while Louis Brookins added eight. UMES shot a respectable 40 percent from the field but the Aggies out did them shooting a scorching 51.2 percent. The Hawks also shot 73 percent from the line compared to NCAT's 46 percent, but the free throws weren't the difference as the Hawk defense allowed too many Aggie points in the paint. The Hawks jumped out to an early lead on an Aly Samabaly three-pointer just 13 seconds into the game. It was followed by a Tim Parham lay-in and a Corey Brown trip to the charity stripe where he made one of two. With a 6-0 lead the Hawks picked up the defense but a Jeff Alvis lay-up put NCAT (4-15, 3-5 MEAC) on the board. Steven Koger would pace NCAT in the first half dropping nine points while Alvis and Demetrius Guions would add five each.
The Hawks were led again by Tim Parham in the first half. Parham was on pace for a double double with six points and six rebounds. Dowling chipped in with five points in the half. While the game went back and forth for most of the half the tide turned in favor of NCAT under the five minute mark when Gregory Davis converted a lay-up and was preceded by a player control foul on Corey Brown on an inbound. Seconds later Shondale Robinson was called for another player control foul on the inbound after the basket. That turnover led to a Guions free throw and the lead was 29-20. Parham responded with a baseline move to cut the lead to seven. On the break the Aggies broke the tough Hawk press that resulted in a thunderous dunk by Guions which brought the Aggie faithful to their feet. Louis Brookins scored with just 24 seconds left and the Hawks trailed 31-24 at the break. When the second half started the two teams traded baskets for six minutes as the score stood at 45-39. NCAT kept scoring as Greg Roberts, Leslie Powell, and the post moves of Alvis extended the lead to 54-43 at the ten minute mark. The Hawks would go cold under the Aggie defense and score only nine points up until the five minute mark. The Aggies rattled off 16 points in that span and led 68-50. A pair of Parham free throws and an Anthony Davis lay-in was all the Hawks would muster for the final five minutes with the exception of one basket. That came on a bank-shot three pointer by reserve guard Stephen Kallman, his first points in a Hawk uniform. Booker closed out the Aggie scoring with a pair of lay-ups and the final score stood at 74-59. UMES heads back home in the winter conditions to face South Carolina State University on Monday with a 7:30 p.m. tip. |
