PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawks dropped their matchup against the preseason conference champions South Carolina State (SCSU) Bulldogs, 67-36. Freshman Ryan Leak (Jamaica, N.Y./Bayside H.S.) scored a career high 20 points in the loss. UMES (1-18, 0-10 MEAC) never had the lead and were down by as many as 14 points in the first half. SCSU (11-9, 4-5 MEAC) jumped out to a 14-4 run to start the game, forcing the Fighting Hawks into committing six turnovers in the first five minutes of play. Free-throws by Leak and Jareem Dowling (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands/Cecil C.C.) put UMES back in the game, cutting the Bulldog lead to four points at 6:39. However a lay-up by Chris Lee and a jumper by Derek Moore put the advantage back up to double-digits, as SCSU took an 11 point lead with 2:50 remaining in the first half. A lay-up by Darris Jackson ended the period to give the Bulldogs a 14 point lead, their largest of the night, 33-19. Corey Brown (Ruthville, Va./Mott C.C.) scored nine points to lead all scorers at the half, while Leak added seven. Shawn Wiggins paced SCSU with seven. The Bulldogs sprinted in the second half, outscoring the Hawks 27-4 to take a 30 point lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. SCSU's lead grew to as many as 38 points at 5:29. A basket by Anthony Davis (Dorchester, Ma./Bunker Hill C.C.) and a trey by Leak cut the lead to 31 points to end the game, but it made little difference as the Bulldogs ran away with the victory, 67-36. Leak finished with 20 points, scoring more than half of the point total for UMES. Brown added 11 points and three steals in the loss. Wiggins had 13 points to lead SCSU.
The Fighting Hawks will play at Delaware State in their next matchup, facing the Hornets on Saturday, February 5 at 4:00pm. |
