PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied a career-high 12 assists, but it wasn't enough to push the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team to victory as they lost, 79-65, to Hampton University Monday night at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.

White's previous high in assists came on November 17, when he recorded 11 at Marquette. In addition to his 12 assists, he recorded nine points, four rebounds and one steal.

Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led the team with 21 points and five rebounds while junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) registered 16 points and three rebounds.

The Hawks shot 42.4 percent from the game but were topped by the Pirates' 49.2 percent from the field. UMES fell to 6-15 overall and 4-4 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play as they were outrebounded, 42-28, and outscored, 38-24, in the paint by Hampton. With the win, the Pirates improve to 7-14 overall and 4-5 in the MEAC.

Haley started the game where he left off Saturday night's 33-point performance with a traditional three-point play at the 18:59 mark. Burns quickly followed up with a basket from beyond the arc for the Hawks to go up 6-5 at 18:01.

Just under the 15-minute mark, senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) grabbed an offensive rebound and laid it back in to put UMES up 13-10.

Hampton would go up by seven before the Hawks would come back within three with a floater by White and then tie the game at 23-23 at the 6:20 mark with a trey from White. Just 20 seconds later, White would drop in a layup to go up, 25-23.

UMES went into halftime down by a score of 34-29.

The Pirates started off the second half with a quick three-pointer by Darrion Pellum, but the Hawks would quickly respond with a 7-0 run with baskets by Pitt, Burns and Haley to make the score 37-36 in favor of Hampton at the 16:52 mark.

That was the closest UMES would get as the Pirates then went on a 12-4 run to make things 51-40 with 12:46 remaining. Redshirt freshman Mark Robertson (Lakewood, N.J.) stopped the run with a three-pointer to come within eight at 51-43 at the 12:30 mark.

The Hawks would then come within three at 51-48 off of a layup, free throw, steal and jumper by Haley within 20 seconds around the 11-minute mark.

Hampton then went on another run, outscoring UMES 15-4 in the next six minutes. The Hawks scored five quick points off of two free throws by White and a three-pointer from Burns to come within 10 at 67-57 with just under five minutes remaining in the game.

The Pirates would go up by 18 points at 77-59 with just over two minutes remaining before closing it out at 79-65.

Michael Freeman recorded a double-double for Hampton with 21 points and 16 rebounds.

UMES begins a three-game road-trip with a contest at Norfolk State on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
