BALTIMORE, Md. - After being down only three at the half, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks had upset in mind, but conference leading Morgan State University (MSU) would have none of it as they pulled away to a 67-52 win on Saturday evening in the Hill Field House. "Overall, I thought the team played extremely well in the first half and I was very pleased, but in the second half we had a tough time making a basket," said Interim Head Coach Meredith Smith. "We had a hard time getting rebounds and shots to fall and I thought that hurt us at the end of the game." UMES (2-20, 0-7 MEAC) went cold from the floor in the second half, converting 21.4 percent from the field and going zero-for-six from beyond the arc as they finished just one-of-15 (6.7 percent) in the game. Despite holding a one rebound advantage in the first half, the Hawks were outrebounded by MSU (12-8, 7-1 MEAC) 29-16 in the second frame and 46-34 overall. The Bears jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.), a Baltimore native, put the Hawks on the board with a three-pointer. Tyson would give UMES their first lead of the game, 18-15, on a three-point play with 10:13 remaining in the first half. MSU would go back up 19-18 following a pair of free throws and a Jamar Smith lay-in, however; Tyson put the Hawks back in the lead with a layup of his own and thus made it 16 out of the first 20 points that he scored for UMES. The teams would exchange several leads over the next minute before MSU went on a six point run that was capped off by a Reggie Holmes three-pointer to give them a 29-24 lead with 5:27 left in the first half. Tyson once again came through for UMES as he tied the game at 30 all on a layup with just over four minutes to go in the first half. He finished with 18 points on a perfect seven-of-seven from the line in the period. MSU would score the final three points of the half to take a 33-30 lead into the break
Both teams were respectable from the floor in the first half as UMES went 10-of-24 (41.7 percent), while MSU converted nine-of-25 (36 percent). The Bears made four-of-10 (40 percent) from downtown compared to just one-of-nine (11.1 percent) for the Hawks. MSU opened up their lead in the second half on a Marquise Kately three-pointer that put them up 46-36 with 13:14 remaining in the game. The Hawks would trim the lead back to eight on two separate occasions, with the latter coming on an Ishmawiyl McFadden (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz H.S.) jumper. The Bears would up their lead back to double digits, 51-40, on a Boubacar Coly dunk with just over eight and half minutes to play. UMES cut the advantage back to single figures twice before MSU would pull away for good. Tyson, the only Hawk to finish in double figures, led all scorers with a game-high 28 points on 13-of-15 shooting from the line, while adding six rebounds and three steals in all but one minutes of action, 39. "I thought Tyson played exceptionally well and I was very impressed with his performance," said Smith. MSU had three players amass double-doubles, including Smith, with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Boubacar Coly added 15 points, a game-high 13 boards, and an impressive six blocks, while Kately rounded out the trio as he pitched in with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Hawks finished close in several categories with MSU, including points in the paint, 26-22, turnovers, 14-13, second chance points, 16-14, and bench points, 16-15. UMES will wrap up their Baltimore trip with a game against Coppin State on Monday, February 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 E.T. and can be heard on WTGM-AM 960 The Team or live on the internet at www.umeshawks.com. |
