Dover, Del. - The Delaware State University (DSU) Hornets took advantage of every Hawk mistake, scoring 41 points on 22 Maryland Eastern Shore turnovers, almost two points a turnover, as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) was stung by the Hornets, 71-45. The Hawks only made seven more turnovers than DSU but it was the way they were converted as UMES got only nine points off of the 15 Hornet miscues. Tim Parham was again the story for UMES (1-19, 0-11 MEAC), grabbing another double double, his eighth in his last 11 games. Parham notched 15 points and 11 rebounds in 32 minutes of play. Corey Brown added nine for the Hawks. Jareem Dowling had seven, all in the first half. The big two of Terrance Hunter and Jahsha Bluntt combined for 39 points. Bluntt also led the Hornets in rebounding with nine. DSU (11-11, 9-2 MEAC) owned the boards, in large point to Bluntt's effort, and out-boarded the Hawks 32-24. The Hornets took only nine more shots on the game but shot 52 percent compared to the Hawk's 42. Parham started the action for the Hawks and had five points and five rebounds in the first six minutes of play. This didn't included an incredible tip-dunk at the 9:15 mark off of a Dowling miss. There was six minutes to play in the first half when Bluntt nailed a three-pointer. It was quickly answered by Brown who made the score 23-19 with 5:15 to play. Coach Larry Lessett gave Parham a breather at this point. He went to bench with seven points, eight rebounds and no fouls. Parham would not return for the rest of the half. Delaware State took full advantage. By the time the clock reached the two minute mark DSU was on a 16-5 run sparked by Bluntt who rattled off 11 points in a 13 point stretch. Aly Samabaly would get his only points if the game when Dowling would grab a loose ball and kick it out to the wing for a three at 1:50. To end the half Bluntt would get a tip in as time expired on the fourth Delaware State try to make it 36-25, an 11-point lead at the break.
After Hunter made a pair of free throws to start the half the Hawks got back-to-back buckets by Brown and Parham to cut it to 38-29 at the 18:21 mark. A lay-up by DSU's Aaron Williams would put the lead back to 11 but a jumper from the weak-side by Shondale Robinson brought the lead back to single digits. Williams went strong to the rack and got fouled, converting one of two. Another Parham lay-up would cut the lead to eight, 41-33 with 16 minutes to play. UMES would get no closer. Delaware State went on to a 17-8 run. The Hawks only got baskets from Tal Cohen, Brown and Parham, along with a pair of Parham free throws during an eleven minute stretch. It was 58-41 with five minutes to play. Over the next minute and a half the Hornets ran the lead to 27, 68-41. Anthony Davis would get a free throw and a three-pointer to cut it to 68-45 with 1:29 to play. Delaware State would get three points from their back-ups, Brandon Coles and Alain Walker, to close the game and win, 71-45. The Hawks travel to Howard University at 8:00 pm on Monday, February 7, 2005 for a MEAC contest. |
