PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) scored a career-high 37 points but it was not enough to lift the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) over South Carolina State (SCSU) in a men's basketball contest Monday night. UMES dropped a close MEAC decision to the Bulldogs, 77-74 and remains winless in conference. The contest was a close one and featured three ties and 13 lead changes. The maroon and gray took its largest lead of the night in the first half at 9:56, when a Tyson lay-up put the Hawks ahead 23-15. UMES (3-20, 0-11 MEAC) matched that eight point lead later in the half when Tyson hit a pair of free-throws, but SCSU battled back with a 13-4 run over the next three minutes. Derrick Davis' jumper at 4:08 gave SCSU a one-point lead at 30-29. The Bulldogs stretched the lead to eight off a Brian Mason free-throw at 1:49, but the Hawks outscored SCSU 8-2 over the final minute and a half of play to cut the lead to a basket. Corey Brown's (Richmond, Va./Mott C.C) lay-up closed UMES within two at the half, 41-39. The Hawks traded baskets with SCSU early in the second half and took a four point lead at 16:22 from a Brown trey. The Bulldogs had a six point lead midway through the half, but Tyson kept UMES in striking distance when he hit a lay-up to give the Hawks a one-point lead with just over a minute left. A costly turnover by Tyson, however, and two baskets by SCSU sealed the Bulldog win. The Bulldogs ended the game on a mini 4-0 run to ink the win. "I'm really proud of the team," said UMES head coach Larry Lessett. "Ed played the entire game and played his heart out. We are not conceding, we are going to win, but it's hard to win without key players such as Jesse (Brooks)." Tyson led all scorers with 37 points on 10-18 shooting from the field. He inked 14-18 from the free-throw line and scored 22 of his 37 in the first half. Brown finished with 17 points and Aleksandar Popovic (Novi Sad, Serbia/Weatherford College) chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
SCSU (9-13, 9-5 MEAC) was paced by Brian Mason's 20 points. Flagler added 16 points off the bench while Derrick Davis contributed 10. The Hawks shot 42% from the field compared to 48% by South Carolina State. UMES made 11-of-12 from the charity stripe in the first half and finished 20-32 from the line while SCSU converted 20-of-30 (67%). The maroon and gray held a 15-2 advantage in fast break points and also outscored the Bulldogs 19-13 in points off turnovers. SCSU edged UMES 34-30 in the paint and 18-16 in second chance points, and held outscored the Hawks 31-0 in bench play. The Hawks return to action on February 12 with a road contest at Delaware State at 7:30 pm. |
