PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Tony Murphy led three Norfolk players in double figures as the Spartans completed a season sweep of UMES Monday night. Norfolk edged the Fighting Hawks, 67-59, in a conference decision at the Hytche Center.

Tim Parham's (Chicago, Ill.) double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds paved the way for UMES, who falls to 5-16 (2-9 MEAC) on the season. Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md.) chipped in with 10 points and three steals for the Fighting Hawks. Qavotstaraj Waddell (Norfolk, Va.) added a game high seven blocks to go along with five points and four rebounds.

Norfolk St. (8-13, 7-4 MEAC) got 20 points from Tony Murphy while Karandick Ogunride and Brian Faulcon added 12 and 10, respectively.

The Spartans shot 53% from the field compared to just 36% by UMES. Norfolk also held a 40-24 rebound advantage over the Hawks.

The visiting Spartans held their largest lead of the night, a 16 point advantage, at 9:47 in the first period as a Tynell Dunkley jumper put Norfolk up 26-10. UMES then sprinted to a 14-4 run over the next nine minutes to end the half, closing them within six of the lead at the break, 30-24.

The Hawks got to within one point of the lead on several occasions in the second half, the last coming at 12:49 as Parham knocked down a free-throw. The senior from Chicago, Illinois scored 19 consecutive points for UMES over the next 10 minutes but Norfolk still garnered a six-point lead over the maroon and gray, forcing the Hawks to foul for possession. The Spartans sealed their win from the free-throw line as they hit four from the charity stripe as time expired.

UMES is off for a week, next taking on local rival Delaware State in a road decision on Monday, February 6. Game time at Memorial Hall is slated for 7:30 p.m.
