WASHINGTON, D.C. - Howard's Eugene Myatt scored a game-high 22 to lead the Bison past the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team, 72-65, at Burr Gymnasium Saturday.

Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) picked up his eighth double-double of the season with 17 points and a game- and career-high 18 rebounds for the Hawks, who dropped their fourth consecutive game and fell to 6-16 and 2-7 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.

Keishawn Mayes (Warrenton, N.C.) and Gary Lee (Flint, Mich.) came off the bench for 12 points apiece. Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds.

Down, 65-64, with 1:09 remaining, Pitt had a chance to give the Hawks their only lead of the game with a pair of free throws, but couldn't convert either attempt. After a timeout, Myatt knocked down a jumper with 49 seconds left and Howard (6-16, 4-5 MEAC) went 4-for-4 from the line to ensure the win, its third straight.

UMES got to within one on three occasions in the second half, but wasn't able to complete a comeback.

Trailing by nine at the break, the Hawks opened the final 20 minutes with 11-of-16 points over the first 2:59, cutting the HU lead to 40-37. UMES got contributions from five players in the spurt, including Josh Bright (Salisbury, Md.), who's 3-pointer made it a one-possession game.

The late-game free throws didn't represent the only chance for Pitt and UMES to seize the momentum of the game. He had a similar opportunity with a little over five minutes gone in the second half. With the score, 43-41, Pitt drained one from the stripe but not the second and once again the Hawks trailed by just one.

Howard pushed the lead to seven at the 11:54 mark with three from long range, two of which came from Curtis White, for a 54-47 lead.

The Hawks responded getting with striking distance again at 58-55 when Lee hit a three of his own with just over eight minutes to play.

The teams traded two more 3-pointers apiece as White and C.J. Prince tallied treys sandwiching threes from Marc Davis (Baltimore, Md.) and Mayes for a 64-61 game with 5:12 to go.

After a pair of free throws from Myatt, Pitt scored four straight to set up his pressure-packed free throws.

The game started with Howard's Randy Hampton hitting a three to cap an 8-0 run and give the Bison a 14-5 lead with 14:12 left in the first.

With Howard leading, 24-12, the Hawks answered with an identical 8-0 stretch. Chris Conner (Powell, Tenn.) and Pitt hit back-to-back shots in the paint before Sammy Obetoh (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied a layup and a follow-up hoop to cut the lead to four with 6:15 remaining in the half.

Howard closed the half outscoring UMES, 11-6, for a 35-26 halftime advantage.

The Hawks were 24-of-58 from the floor for 41.4 percent, while the Bison shot 36.2 percent (21-for-58) for the game. UMES held a 47-37 rebounding edge, but 16 turnovers to Howard's 11.

UMES plays Hampton at the Convocation Center Monday at 8 p.m.
