DURHAM, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team wasn't able to control the paint as they lost, 73-71, to North Carolina Central University Wednesday night at McDougald-McLendon Gym.

The Hawks were outscored, 36-20, in the paint and also outrebounded, 38-25. The Eagles registered 17 offensive rebounds to UMES' nine.

Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led the Hawks in scoring with 16 points and added in four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. Junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) continues his stellar season of dishing out assists as he had seven on the night in addition to 10 points and four steals while sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) led UMES with seven rebounds.

With the non-conference loss, the Hawks fall to 7-17 overall and 3-11 on the road. NCCU improves to 6-20 on the season.

The Eagles put the pressure on early as they started the game with a full-court press, which caused problems for UMES. Head coach Frankie Allen didn't like what he saw coming out of the gates and called for a 30-second timeout at the 17:47 mark. After the timeout, Hines quickly zipped a pass across the paint for Haley, who put it up for two, to make the score 5-4, with NCCU leading.

The Eagles would go up by nine before White hit a smooth jumper to tie the game at 15-15 at the 11:31 mark. Just over 30-seconds later, the Hawks took their first lead of the game off of a three-pointer from senior Roland Dunston (Bear, Del.).

At the 7:40 mark, junior Freddy Obame Obame (Libreville, Gabon) brought UMES within three at 23-20 with an easy lay-in in the paint. Twenty seconds later, junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) stole the ball and passed it off to Hines who went in for a powerful layup.

NCCU continued to go up by nine once again before junior Josh Bright (Salisbury, Md.) drained a trey at the 1:01 mark to bring the halftime score to 37-31 in favor of the Eagles.

Dijon Manns was the story of the first half for NCCU as he scored 16 points, 14 of which were from inside the paint.

The Hawks came out of the locker room with a spark as they would go on a 13-0 run in the first five minutes to go up 44-37. At the 17:31 mark, Hines dished out another assist as freshman Sean Berry (Irvington, N.J.) powered into the paint for a layup to tie the game at 37-37.

UMES would take the lead with a free throw by Hines at 16:50 and approximately 15 seconds later, Burns would drain a jumper from downtown to go up 41-37. Redshirt freshman Mark Robertson (Lakewood, N.J.) joined the three-party with his own at the 15:59 mark to put the Hawks ahead, 44-37. Another trey from Robertson at the 13:47 mark put UMES up by score of 51-42.

With 11:27 remaining, White stole the ball and dished it off to Dunston, who proceeded to fake out three defenders on the low box and put it up for a layup to bring the score to 55-50. The Hawks continued their flashy plays when Hines received a no-look pass from Haley at the 9:52 mark to go up, 58-55.

Four consecutive free throws and a jumper by the Eagles put them up by four at 69-65 before a traditional three-point play by Burns and a 3-pointer by Haley made the score 71-69 with 1:28 remaining.

Four more free throws by NCCU put them up at 73-71 with four seconds left in the game. A three-pointer by UMES as the buzzer went off was no good as the Eagles took the game from the Hawks.

UMES returns home for a four-game home-stand beginning on Saturday with a 4 p.m. game against the Florida A&M Rattlers.
