Dover, Del. - Jahsha Bluntt had 25 points to lead all scorers while Roy Bright had 17 and Troy Roundtree 12 to give Delaware State University (DSU) the 69-59 win over the visiting Hawks of the University of Maryland Easter Shore (UMES), 69-59.

Ed Tyson had another great scoring night, netting 24 points on eight of 17 shooting. He added five rebounds and two assists. UMES Also got 11 points each from Antonio McMillion and Corey Brown. B.J. Nimocks led the Hawk rebounding effort with seven. UMES won the overall battle as well, 34-33.

With the loss UMES falls to 3-21 and remains winless in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) at 0-12. In contrast, the first place Hornets move to 11-2 in the MEAC and 14-11 overall.

The big men got it done for DSU as they tallied 38 points in the paint to the Hawks' 22. The Hornets also capitalized on UMES miscues, scoring 17 points on just 12 turnovers.

In the early goings the two rivals went back and forth, having two ties and two lead changes in the first seven minutes. The Hawks had their only lead three minutes in as Aleksandar Popovic converted a put-back to make it a 4-2 game.

DSU led by as many as 10 in the first frame and was up nine, 32-23. The Hornets extended that lead to 16,s even minutes into the second half. Then the Hawks made a run.

It was under ten at the 8:32 mark as Tyson swished a jumper from the left side to make it 53-44. A Brown trey made it six just 34 seconds later, 53-47 and DSU needed a basket. Non one scored for the next three minutes. The Hornets looked to no one else but Bluntt who laid it in at the 5:04 mark to extend the lead back to eight. It was 12 with 1:45 to play and UMES got it down to eight with just 57 seconds to play and the Hawks were forced to foul. A pair of free throws by Kyle White extended it back to ten, 66-56/ Bluntt made one of two from the line followed by a Tyson three-pointer to make it 67-59. Bluntt sealed the win with a dunk with less than 30 seconds left to make it a 69-59 game.

 

 

UMES heads to Florida this weekend taking on the Rattlers on Florida A & M on Saturday and looks for revenge against a Bethune-Cookman team that beat UMES at the buzzer earlier this season when they play them on Monday.
