PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawks lost their home contest against the Norfolk State Spartans, 68-52. The Hawks fell behind by as many as 21 points and shot 30% from the field in the loss.

Norfolk State (12-11, 10-5 MEAC) sprinted to a 13-2 run to open the game, holding UMES (2-22, 1-14 MEAC) to one field goal in the first five minutes of the half. Chakowby Hicks hit a lay-up at 12:14 to give the Spartans a 13 point lead, but the Hawks outscored Norfolk State 13-5 over the next four minutes to close within five points of the lead at 7:11.

UMES could not hold on to the momentum, as a dunk by Karandick Ogunride at 5:39 capped off a 14-0 run by the Spartans. UMES missed their final eight shots, helping Norfolk State to a 21 point lead at halftime, 38-17.

Aly Samabaly (Bamako, Mali/Duquesene) led the Hawks at the half, finishing with 10 points on 4-6 shooting from the field. Hicks paced the Spartans with 10, while Ogunride added eight.

UMES opened the second half on a 10-3 run, forcing Norfolk State into committing three turnovers and two fouls in a four minute span. Corey Brown (Ruthville, VA/Mott CC) hit a free-throw at 12:38 to cut the Spartan lead down to 11, but the lead ballooned to 17 off of a trey by Tony Murphy at 8:44.

Shondale Robinson (Dallas, Texas/Estacado HS) hit a free-throw to cut the Norfolk State advantage to 13 with five minutes remaining in the game but the Hawks missed their next three shots as Ryan Grier gave the Spartans their largest lead of the half, a 20 point advantage at 2:46.

Brown made a lay-up at 1:19 to make it a 16 point lead for Norfolk State, but time ran out for UMES as they dropped the matchup, 68-52.

 

 

UMES was led by Brown, who had a team high 18 points in the loss. Samabaly added 11, while Terrell Harris added nine. Hicks scored 18 to lead the Spartans, while Murphy finished with 11. Ogunride and Ryan Grier chipped in with 10 each.

The Hawks will play Hampton in their final home game of the season, facing the Pirates in a 7:30pm contest on Monday, February 21.
