Feb. 26, 2013
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --Dominique Cowell and Louis Bell each scored 14 points for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in its four-point loss to Howard University. UMES held a 12-point lead with 10:50 remaining in the second half before losing the game 49-45 to its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent.
UMES opened the game with a three-pointer by Cowell, as the Hawks would go on to lead by as many as eight-points (15-7) at 10:29 in the first half. The Bison had cut the Hawks lead to one by 6:47, but would trail UMES for the remainder of the half. Ishaq Pitt would score a layup with two seconds before intermission to give UMES a three-point lead (22-19) at the end of the first half.
The Hawks scored nine points off of the Bison's nine turnovers in the first period, and added five second-chance points. Bell opened the second half similar to Cowell in the first period, with a three pointer. Bell was 3-of-6 (.500) from behind the three-point arc. Cowell was 4-of-8 (.500) from the same area.
Up six points with 14:04 remaining in the second half from a jumper by Bell, the Hawks followed that score with two points by Pitt. Bell returned down the court to score another three-pointer, lifting the Hawks lead to its highest of that game at that time.
Bell would score back-to-back three pointers for the Hawks, with his second in a two-minute span giving UMES its largest lead of the game with 10:50 remaining in the game. The Bison would go on a 14-2 run in the course of two-and-a-half minutes, to trail the Hawks by two points with 8:36 left in the contest.
Kevin Mays, who finished with six points, scored the Hawks' only basket between the 10:12 and 8:36 mark. Neither team would score a bucket until a Howard player scored a three pointer to take the lead 38-37. It was the first time the opponent led in the game.
It would follow that score at 5:12 with a three pointer at 4:55, and push its lead to nine points with 2:06 left in the game. With time left in the game to push for a win, Troy Snyder scored on a three pointer for the Hawks to bring the score to 46-40.
A layup by Pitt and eventual three pointer by Cowell cut the Bison lead to two points (47-45) with 19 seconds remaining in the game. Forced to foul, UMES would give up two points at the free-throw line, leaving it no time to score as time ran off the clock.
The Hawks return to action March 2 to face Morgan State at 4:00 p.m. at Morgan State.
