PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks ended a seven game losing streak Monday night as they took down the Coppin State Eagles, 65-60, in a home decision at the Hytche Center. UMES (6-20, 3-13 MEAC) got two 20-point performances from freshman Troy Jackson (Wilkes Barre, Pa.) and senior Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill.). Jackson finished with a game high 27 points on 9-14 shooting from the field while Parham finished with a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds. Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md.) dished out a game high seven assists. Darryl Proctor's 24 points led Coppin State (11-17, 11-6 MEAC). The Hawks held a 37-28 rebounding advantage and held the Eagles to just four treys the entire game. Jackson, who scored 20 of his points in the first half, helped UMES cruise to a 21-point lead in the first half as the Hawks took a 19-0 run midway through the period. The freshman from Wilkes Barre, Pa., scored 15 consecutive points for the maroon and gray during that spurt. Coppin, however, went on a run of their own towards the end of the period as they jumped to a 19-7 run to end the half. Proctor had 14 of the Eagles' final 16 points as Coppin went into the locker room down by just nine points, 65-60. Michael Norwood's lay-up at 12:07 in the second half closed the Eagles to within one point of the lead, but that is the closest they would get as UMES pushed their advantage up to eight points with just over three minutes left in the game. Robert Pressley's jumper with a minute remaining cut the Hawks lead down to three, but Parham hit a pair of free-throws with 11 seconds left to seal the victory for the maroon and gray. "It was a great game, we made some incredible plays down the stretch," Head Coach Larry Lessett said. "I'm really proud of our team effort tonight."
The Hawks will next take on South Carolina State on March 1 in a road decision at Orangeburg, South Carolina. Tip-off at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center is slated for 7:30 pm. |
