TYLER HINES FINISHES WITH DOUBLE-DOUBLE ON SENIOR NIGHT

Princess Anne, Md. --Tyler Hines finished with a double-double performance for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Thursday. Hines scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Hawks 73-54 loss to conference leading Savannah State University.
UMES hosted the first place Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tigers in the team's first match-up of the season. Hines recorded a team-high eight defensive rebounds for the Hawks, dished two assists and was 50 percent from the field for UMES. Teammate Hillary Haley scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 (.615) shooting. Haley was 5-of-7 (.714) at the charity stripe and 50 percent from beyond the three-point line.
Hines scored a lay-up early in the game to tie the Tigers, but UMES would fall behind as the first half continued. As a team, the Hawks scored just 26 points in the paint. Haley appeared late in the first half to make two free throws with less than a minute in the period. UMES struggled to score against the tough Savannah State defense.
Opening the second half down 40-24, Haley scored a lay-up in the paint followed by a jumper at 18:27. A lay-up by Hines with 8:08 remaining marked the Hawks offensive attack on the Savannah State lead. After trailing by as much as 24 points in five minutes, UMES saw points from Haley, Hines and Percy Woods.
Woods opened the second half with a couple of scores for the Hawks, and would finish with eight points on the night. For the last seven minutes of the second half, Haley and Hines would bring UMES within 14 points of the lead.
Haley scored two free throws to cut the lead to 55-49 at 5:19, and later score a three-pointer to keep the game at the game within striking distance. Unfortunately for the Hawks it was held scoreless until the end of regulation.
UMES will contend for the MEAC Championship March 5-10 in Wintson-Salem, N.C., and begin play on March 6. Seeding at opponents had not been released at the time of this release.
