PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawks won their final regular season contest Saturday afternoon as they edged Howard in a close 73-72 decision at the Hytche Center. Freshman Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md.) hit the game winner for the Hawks as UMES improved to 7-21 on the season (4-14 MEAC).

Brooks finished the game with 14 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field. Troy Jackson (Wilkes Barre, Pa.) had a game high 18 points while Antonio McMillion (Randallstown, Md.) chipped in with 16. Senior Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill.) finished with a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds. He, and Terrell Harris (Philadelphia, Pa.), were playing in their final home game for the Fighting Hawks.

Howard, who fell to 6-21 (5-13 MEAC) on the year, got 16 points from Will Gant. Eugene Myatt finished with 14 while Darryl Hudson added 13. Louis Ford dished out a game high 11 assists.

The game was a hard fought contest as the first half alone featured seven ties. HU took their largest lead of the game, a five point advantage, near the end of the first period as a Myatt lay-up capped a 13-5 run by the Bison. Howard went into the break with a slim one point advantage, 36-35.

UMES responded with a run of their own in the second half as they outscored HU 15-3 and took a seven point lead, their largest of the night, at 13:34.

The Bison outscored the maroon and gray 8-0 over the next few minutes and took a 68-65 advantage as a pair of Hudson free-throws put Howard up by five with just over two minutes left in the game.

Jason Trotter converted two free-throws with: 24 seconds remaining gave the lead back to HU but Brooks drained a trey from the top of the key to seal the senior day win for the maroon and gray.

The tenth place Hawks will play their first-round MEAC Tournament game against Norfolk State this Tuesday, March 7. UMES faces off with the Spartans in a 6:30 pm contest at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
