Box Score | MEAC Tournament Bracket
DOVER, Del. - The goal of the night was receive a win and clinch a first-round bye in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament, but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team failed to do so as they lost, 57-37, to Delaware State in front of a packed Memorial Hall. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 10-20 overall, 8-8 in the MEAC and wrap up the sixth seed in the upcoming conference tournament. UMES fell victim to turnovers this evening, as they recorded 25 (14 of which came in the second half), compared to just eight for the Hornets. DSU scored 22 points off of these turnovers while the Hawks had just seven. Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led UMES in scoring with 11 points. He also contributed five rebounds, one block and one steal. Sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, all in the first half. Within the first six minutes of the game, three Hawk juniors made nifty plays in the paint, starting with Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) driving through defenders to score two. Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) responded in the next possession by driving along the baseline and through the paint with a reverse layup. Freddy Obame Obame (Libreville, Gabon) then powered his way through three defenders to tie the game at 8-8. Less than a minute later, Obame Obame put UMES on top, 10-8, with a huge one-handed dunk, which had the Hawk faithful drowning out the Hornet fans. After a layup by White at the 12:49 mark, DSU would go on a 7-0 run, not allowing the UMES to score for the next six-plus minutes. The run was halted when White stole the ball from the Hornets' Kris Douse at the 6:25 mark, passed it off to Burns and then received it back for a fast break layup to come within three at 17-14.
With 3:46 remaining in the half, Haley pulled up for a trey to bring the score to 21-17 in favor of DSU. The Hornets continued to lead going into halftime, by a score of 28-17. The second half started off slowly for both teams, with the Hawks outscoring DSU, 10-6, as the squads would go a combined 4-for-18 from the field before the second media timeout of the game. UMES would come within seven at 38-31with two consecutive shots by Haley with over seven minutes left to play. With 3:47 left on the clock, Haley forced a turnover by the Hornets' Chad Wilson, and passed it to White for two more fast break points in the paint, to bring the Hawks within six at 42-36. The final three minutes of the game turned into a free throw contest with the two teams combining for six fouls and DSU scoring seven points from the charity stripe. The Hornets would go on to win it in the waning minutes, 57-37. Marcus Neal led DSU in scoring with 18 points. Jay Threatt contributed eight assists, six steals and five rebounds in the win. The Hornets finish the regular season with a 16-11 overall record and an 11-5 MEAC record. UMES squares off against No. 11 Coppin State at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 10 in the MEAC Tournament at Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C. |
