Richmond, VA - Wiggins, who was 6 for 7 from the floor in the second half, scored the Hawks' last field goal at the 3:49 mark to give his team a 50-45 lead. B-CC's Diondre Larmond scored on a five footer in the lane to cut the deficit to 50-47. Didier Socka added a free throw for UMES but Markey Picard converted three of four free throw attempts to reduce the margin to 51-50 with 44 seconds left on the clock. The Hawks attempted to utilize the clock and forced the Wildcats (8-21) to foul. UMES's Tee Trotter, who is shooting 86 percent from the charity stripe on the season, missed the front end of the one-and-one, leaving the door open for a last-second shot by the Wildcats. The Hawks called a timeout and set up a play. However, the inbounds play intended for Pape Ba was tapped away by Wiggins. Larmond retrieved the loose ball and launched a three pointer that missed and UMES was in the tournament for the first time in four years. "If you had told me that our top two scorers, Tee Trotter and Aaron Wellington would not score in the second half and we would still come out on top, I would not have believed it," said UMES Head Coach Thomas Trotter. "But I told the players that there would be games where some of them would have to step up and today they did. Javes, Didier, Tim Parham and Antoine Joiner all made plays today that add up to this win."
The Wildcats got outstanding performances from Picard, who scored 13 of his game-high 18 points in the second half and Larmond, who came off the bench to score nine of his 14 after intermission. But in the end, it was poor shooting that proved to be the difference.
"When you look at the stats, they don't lie," said B-CC Coach Cliff Reed. "We did a lot of good things, but we did not shoot the ball well. We shot 34 percent in the second half and that is just enough to win these kind of games." |
