PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team started the game strong, but failed to capitalize on free throw opportunities as they lost 75-57 to Stony Brook University on Friday at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center. Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led the Hawks in scoring with 13 points, who began the season 0-1. Redshirt freshman Mark Robertson (Lakewood, N.J.) also scored in double digits with 10 points, nine of which came in the first half. The score went back and forth between the teams through the first 14 minutes of the game, but in the last minutes of the first half, the Seawolves started to break away. UMES led by six at the 13-minute mark, which was their highest lead of the game. SBU led by 12 going into the locker room at half time with a score of 40-28. The momentum stayed on the side of the Seawolves as they led by mostly double digits almost the entire second half of play. The charity stripe did not treat UMES well as they made just 47.1% of their free throws (16-for-34), while SBU shot 77.8% (21-for-27). "I am disappointed we didn't play better, but Stony Brook played well and they were the better team this evening," said head coach Frankie Allen. "We've had good practices and the kids were ready to go, but they wanted it more mentally and physically. All in all, we lost to a very good team." Senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Redshirt junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) led the Hawks with three assists while freshman James Cotton (Pocomoke, Md.) had three steals. Senior Muhammad El-Amin led all scorers with 25 points for Stony Brook (1-0). The Hawks travel to Milwaukee, Wisc. for a matchup against the Marquette Golden Eagles on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m.
