SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Seventeen points by senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) were not enough for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team to get by The Citadel as they lost 88-62 Sunday in their final game of the Hispanic College Fund Challenge hosted by Missouri State at JQH Arena. In a breakout game for Pitt, he nearly doubled his point total of the season, which was 19 points entering the contest against the Bulldogs. He also grabbed five rebounds in the loss. Freshman James Cotton (Pocomoke, Md.) and junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each had 10 points for the Hawks. Cotton also had three rebounds and one blocked shot while White contributed three assists, one rebound and one steal. Junior Freddy Obame Obame (Libreville, Gabon) brought down a game-high 10 rebounds and added in four points of his own. The game started off with two quick 3-pointers by redshirt sophomores Mark Robertson (Lakewood, N.J.) at 19:45 and Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) at 19:09 for the Hawks to go up 6-2. The Citadel's Austin Dahn, Zach Urbanus and Joe Wolfinger quickly responded with their own 3's to take the lead 11-8 at 17:10. The Bulldogs would never look back in the game. Despite foul trouble in previous games, UMES committed their first foul at the 14:50 mark by freshmen Sean Berry (Irvington, N.J.) and had only five in the first half. No Hawks fouled out of the game. UMES went into halftime down 42-30 and scored their last point at 2:34 with a basket by White to make things 38-30. The second half started off with two quick fouls by Pitt at 19:46 and Cotton at 19:42. The Hawks looked like they could get back in the game after Pitt was fouled at 18:46 and made a 3-point play to get within 12 points at 47-35. The Bulldogs were just too much for UMES to handle as this was the closest they would get.
The Bulldogs made a JQH Arena record 13 3-point shots in the matchup and combined with the Hawks to make 18 total in the game. The Citadel shot 13-of-27 (.481) from 3-point land while UMES was 5-of-17 (.294). Wolfinger led The Citadel with 17 points and eight rebounds, going 6-of-7 overall and 5-of-5 from behind the arc. Four other Bulldogs scored in double-digits in Mike Groselle (14), Urbanus (14), Cameron Wells (14) and Dahn (11). The Hawks return home to host American University on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. |
