PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team (2-7) picked up its second home win of the season defeating the Naval Academy (3-5) 59-46 Wednesday. Three Hawks tallied double figures in its win. Ishaq Pitt had a game-high 19 points for UMES.

Pitt posted his second consecutive double figure outing this season. He was 8-of-13 (.615) from the floor and better than 3-of-4 (.750) at the free-throw line. Pitt finished with four assists and snagged two steals. With 13-minutes remaining in the first half, Pitt scored a lay-up in the paint to give the Hawks a seven-point (12-5) lead.

UMES maintained at least a five point lead from Pitt's score until the end of the first half. Teammate Tyler Hines spurred the Hawks run for the lead and finished with his first double-double of the season. Hines grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to give UMES a one-point advantage at 16:04. In his 29 minutes, Hines posted 11 points and 14 rebounds, his second highest total in boards this season.

Hines has been the team leader in rebounds with an average of 7.2 rebounds per game. The senior had a season-high 15 rebounds in the season opener at George Washington.

For the third time this season UMES led at halftime, with Louis Bell leading the way with nine points. Bell, who was 3-of-8 from behind the three-point line, has led the team in three-point shooting all season. On the season Bell is just shy of 44 percent (25-of-57) from downtown.

A three pointer by Bell at 11:37 gave the Hawks its largest lead of the first half (15-7) and he hit another with less than five minutes to keep Navy from taking a lead. Bell finished the game making 5-of-11 (.454) from three-point land. The Hawks made 6-of-19 (.317) from behind the three-point arc.

 

 

As a team, the Hawks shot better than 45 percent (23-of-51) from the floor, which is its second highest shooting percentage of the season. UMES shot 48 percent against American. The Hawks did not shoot less than 45 percent in either half.

J.J. Avila led Navy with 14 points in his 40 minutes of play, and grabbed 11 rebounds. He was 5-of-11 (.454) from the field, and 4-of-5 (.800) at the free-throw line.

The Hawks will return to the court Saturday, Dec. 3 when it faces conference foe Delaware State at 4 PM.
