PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Fighting Hawks defeated the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Retrievers, 69-62, to earn their first victory of the season.

The Fighting Hawks (1-2) started the game on a roll, going on a 12-4 run in the first five and a half minutes of play. The Retrievers (1-3) cut the lead down to four at the ten-minute mark but were not able to keep up the momentum, as UMES played good defense that led to an 11 point lead with four minutes remaining. UMBC fought back, making six consecutive free throws that sliced into the Hawk lead as time expired. However the Fighting Hawks still had the advantage, going into the locker room with a six-point lead, 28-22.

Senior Jason McKinnon (Chicago, Ill/Kennedy King CC) was the leading scorer for UMES at the half, tallying eight points and eight rebounds in 17 minutes. Anthony Davis (Dorchester, Mass/Bunker Hill CC) had six points, while Carl Pruitt (Chicago, Ill/Kennedy King CC) chipped in with five. Andrew Feely's eight points led the Retrievers.

UMBC started the second half on a 6-0 run and were finally able to take their first lead of the night, gaining a two point advantage over the Hawks at 17:26, 30-28. The lead was short lived, as UMES went on their own 6-0 run capped off by a jumper by Pruitt. The Retrievers capitalized on a couple of turnovers by the Hawks and cut the lead to one with 7:25 remaining, but that is the closest they would get. The UMES lead ballooned to nine at 2:06 and UMBC was forced to foul to gain possession of the ball, which led to 14 Hawk free throw attempts in the final 1:44 of play. Jareem Dowling (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands/Cecil CC), Pruitt and Davis knocked down key free throws to seal the victory for UMES, 69-62.

Pruitt led the Hawks, scoring a career high 17 points on 5-12 shooting from the field. McKinnon also had a career high in points, finishing with 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds, tying his career high in that area. Dowling added 10 points and nine rebounds, while Davis and Corey Brown (Ruthville, Va/Mott CC) each had nine. Feely had a game high 20 points, while Cory McJimson added 18 for the Retrievers.

UMES will begin conference play this weekend, facing Delaware State in a double-header on Saturday, December 4. Tip off at the Hytche Center is slated for 4:00pm.
