PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Fighting Hawks basketball team lost to the Morehead State Eagles, 62-45, dropping their third consecutive match up.

UMES (1-5) hung tight with Morehead (5-2) throughout the first half, taking a five point lead in the first nine minutes of play. A fast break lay-up by Josh Reed changed the momentum in favor of the Eagles at 9:39, as Morehead banked their next three shots and sprinted to a 24-4 run to end the half.

Senior Jason McKinnon (Chicago, Ill/Kennedy King CC) led the Hawks at the half, scoring six points in 11 minutes. Freshman Louis Brookins (Silver Spring, Md/Springbrook) chipped in with three points off the bench, while Anthony Davis (Dorchester, Mass/Bunker Hill CC), Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill/Ellsworth CC) and Aly Samabaly (Bamako, Mali/Duquesne) each added two. Chad McKnight had 17 points and five rebounds to lead the Eagles.

UMES quickly rebounded to start the second half, forcing four Morehouse turnovers en route to an 11-2 run in the first four minutes of play. The Fighting Hawks continued their run, cutting the Eagle lead to three points at 13:04 off of a jumper by Carl Pruitt (Chicago, Ill/Kennedy King CC) and a fast break lay-up by Corey Brown (Ruthville, Va/Mott CC).

Brown hit a jumper at 11:26 to cut the Morehead lead to three points again, but the Eagles went on another run, outscoring the Hawks 25-11 to close out the game. McKnight, who had a game high 27 points, scored 10 of the Eagles' 15 points during that span and sealed the win for Morehead.

 

 

McKinnon had 12 points and six rebounds to lead UMES. Brown finished with nine points, three steals and three rebounds, while Davis chipped in with seven points and two boards. McKnight had a double-double, scoring 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles.

The Fighting Hawks embark on a six-game road trip, beginning with a contest at Nicholls State on Saturday, December 18. UMES will then travel to Texas, playing at Texas Christian and Baylor before facing Portland State on December 29.

The men continue their road trip into the New Year, facing MEAC opponents Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman on January 8 and 10 before returning home to face Brown on Friday, January 14.
