Waco, Texas - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's basketball team jumped out of the gates early taking a 10-5 lead in the first five minutes before giving up a 13-5 run to fall to a 23-15 Baylor lead at the 8:07 mark. The Hawks then cut the lead to three at the 6:22 mark on an Aly Samabaly (Bamko, Mali/Duquesne) three-pointer but allowed another Bear run of 24-3 to close the half and take a 50-28 lead to the locker-room. The Hawks (1-8) got career highs from senior Jareem Dowling (U.S. Virgin Islands/Cecil C.C.) who netted 22 points, a game high and from Ryan Leak (Jamaica, N.Y./Bayside) who added 15, 14 in the second half. Tim Parham (Chicago, Ill./Ellsworth C.C.) pitched in with 16 points of his own to help the Hawks reach a season high of 73 points. In the second half Baylor's Kevis Shipman drained a three-pointer to give the Bears a 25 point lead at the 19:34 mark. Then the Hawks got hot, going on a 17-4 run sparked by two Dowling three-pointers and some inspired play by Parham. The lead was cut to 12 at that point on a tip-in by Jason McKinnon (Chicago, Ill./Kennedy-King C.C.). Foul trouble was also a problem for the Hawks who saw Samabaly foul out at the 2:26 mark and McKinnon and Corey Brown (Ruthville, Va./Mott C.C.) forced to play just moments at a time with four fouls each. UMES didn't come closer than 14, which came at the 7:41 mark when Parham hit a lay-in to make it 76-62. From there the Bears (4-3) went on to extend their lead to 26 with just 41 seconds left. Tal Cohen (Hadera, Isreal/Tichon Hadera) hit a pair of free throws at the end to make it a 24 point win for the Bears, 97-73.
Baylor placed five players in double figures. Aaron Bruce had 22 while Tim Bush and Tommy Swanson each added 16. Swanson has a game high seven rebounds. Patrick Fields and Roscoe Biggers had 13 and 11 points respectively. The Bears shot 55.4 percent from the floor, 50 percent from the arc and 75 percent from the charity stripe. In comparison UMES was solid shooting as well with 50 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the free throw line including ten for ten in the second half. The Hawks now take a few days off for the Christmas holiday and hit the road again with a trip to Portland State on December 29 followed by return to conference play in Florida at Florida A & M and Bethune-Cookman on the eighth and tenth of January. Their next home game is January 14th against Brown at 1:00 p.m. |
