MUNCIE, Ind. - Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) and junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team fell to Ball State, 65-47 in front of 2,903 at James E. Worthen Arena Monday night.

Haley, who was 5-for-12 from the floor and 3-for-9 from 3-point land, also had three rebounds, three steals and one assist.

White continues to dish out assists on the season as he had six for the night in addition to four rebounds, one block and one steal.

Sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) led the Hawks in rebounds with nine. He added in four points and one blocked shot.

The game started for the Hawks with a jumper by junior Freddy Obame Obame (Libreville, Gabon) to make things 3-2, in response to a 3-pointer by the Cardinals' Jauwan Scaife.

Three straight 3-pointers by Haley under the 14-minute mark put UMES up 15-9. Ball State responded with eight points before a free throw by freshman Sean Berry (Irvington, N.J.) tied the game at 16-16. After a free throw by the Cardinals' Terrence Watson, a jumper by White put the Hawks up once again at 18-17.

Layups by freshman James Cotton (Pocomoke, Md.) and Berry, in addition to a basket by Haley, put UMES down by just four, going into half with a score of 28-24. The Hawks finished the first half with a balanced scoring attack, with six of the eight players who played, scored at least two points.

A free throw by Hines coming out of halftime brought the Hawks within three at 28-25. With the score 32-32, Haley stole the ball from Myron Green, Jr. and went in for a layup to put UMES up by two. Another steal by Haley less than 30 seconds later contributed to a defensive goal tend by the Cardinals, with the points credited to redshirt junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.), to make the score 36-32.

 

 

Ball State tied the game under the 10-minute mark and took the lead just under nine minutes to go with free throws by Jarrod Jones. A layup by Burns at 5:16 tied the game for the sixth time at 43-43.

The Cardinals went up by five with baskets by Jones and Scaife before free throws by redshirt freshman Mark Robertson (Lakewood, N.J.) brought the Hawks within three at 48-43. That was the closest UMES would get as Ball State made six free throws in the final minute of the game.

Jones led Ball State with a double-double (12 points and 12 rebounds) while his teammates Randy Davis and Scaife each had 11.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday night at Nebraska, with tipoff at 4 p.m. EST.
