PORTLAND, OR - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's men's basketball team lost to Portland State University 89-44, as the Vikings extended their winning streak to four-in-a-row and eight of their last ten. The Hawks, who played their fourth game of a long seven-game road trip, fell behind 16-0 to start the game and could never build enough momentum to make it competitive.

Maryland Eastern Shore (1-9), who lost to the Portland State (8-4) last season by 19 points in Princess Anne, dropped its seventh straight game as they played in their final game of 2004.

PSU senior forward Seamus Boxley, who averages 19 points a game, guided the Vikings to the double-digit lead as he scored six points, dished out three assists and grabbed a rebound over the games first six minutes.

However, junior Corey Brown (Ruthville, VA/Mott C.C.) and freshman Tal Cohen (Hadera, Israel/Tichon Hadera H.S.) combined for six points off the bench for the maroon and gray as the Hawks went on a 10-5 run to close to 21-10 with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half.

The Hawks, who committed seven early turnovers to fall behind by 16, reversed the trend as they secured the ball on offense and forced Portland State into 9 turnovers and 10 personal fouls. Following the early Portland State run, UMES played even with the Vikings with both teams scoring 19 points as the half closed with Portland State in control with a 35-19 lead.

In the opening half, freshman center Scott Morrison had a team-high 12 points and five rebounds for the Vikings. Brown led the Hawks with six points, four coming from the free throw line, and junior Tim Parham (Chicago, IL/Ellsworth C.C.) added five points and pulled down five rebounds.

UMES looked to improve upon the 10 turnovers and 20% shooting performance in the first half to cut into the Vikings 16-point advantage. However, Portland State had other thoughts as Morrison continued to dominate the game as he scored 10 points in the first 4:48 of the second half leading PSU on a 15-3 run to open a 28 point lead at 50-22.

The Hawks could not find an answer, even as Morrison went to the bench with his game-high 22 points, as UMES sent the Vikings into the bonus with 13:44 remaining in the game. The lead grew to as many as 44 points at 76-32 as the maroon and gray continued to struggle from the field shooting only 31% from the field, including 0-11 from beyond the arc, compared to the 57% shooting performance by Portland State.

The Vikings closed out the game with a three-pointer by junior Tyler Hollist to claim its biggest lead at 45 points and run out the final seconds for the 89-44 win.

Parham led the way for UMES with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Brown also scored in double figures with 12 points to go along with two assists.

Portland State finished with four players in double-figures led by Morrison's 22 points. Blake Walker had 12 points, Nguye Kaladokubo had 11, while Boxley finished with 10 points.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore will close out its seven-game road trip, which took them to Louisiana, Texas and Oregon, as they travel to Florida to face Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foes Florida A&M on January 8th and Bethune-Cookman on January 10th.
