Princess Anne, Md. - Antonio McMillion scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds but Dartmouth College rallied in the final two and a half minutes to defeat the Fighting Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) 64-59 in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. UMES (2-10), fresh off a tough road defeat to West Virginia played a see saw battle with the Big Green all night. Dartmouth (4-7) never had a lead bigger than nine with a four-point advantage 32-28 at the half. The Hawks stayed close thanks to the solid guard play of Corey Brown, who finished with 18 and Jesse Brooks who notched 14. Brooks saw his first action in three games after leaving the Kansas State game with a left ankle injury. It was a one point game, 58-57 when Dan Biber scored for Dartmouth to make it 60-57 with under a minute to play. The Hawks, without Ed Tyson, who finished with ten points, and big man Brandon Moore, who both fouled out, would find McMillion for a lay-up to make it a 60-59 game with 24 seconds to play. The Hawks were forced to foul and Michael Giovacchini calmly sank two free throws to make it a three-point margin once again. Looking for a shot, Brooks was fouled at the top of the key and missed the front end of a one and one with just five ticks on the clock. UMES fouled again and Biber knocked in two more to seal the Big Green win. Dartmouth controlled the second half much like the first, maintaining the lead until the 6:48 mark of the final frame. Allowing the Hawks to hang around kept it close and on a Brooks three-pointer UMES took the 50-48 advantage. UMES pushed and extended their lead to five on a Brown long-range shot to make it 55-50 with 4:17 to play. The Big Green battled back and regained the lead with under three minutes to play when Giovacchini would drain a three from the corner and get fouled by the Hawks' Shondale Robinson. He converted the charity shot and made it a 56-55 game in favor of Dartmouth. McMillion carried the Hawks down the lane and got a tough lay-in to take the lead right back but Alex Barnett did the same for Dartmouth and they led 58-57 with 2:18 to play.
Dartmouth jumped out to a six-point lead to open the game but UMES closed it on a McMillion free throw, a Brooks trey and a Brown three-pointer. They led 7-6 at the 16:10 mark but the Big Green would regain the lead and hold it at half time 32-28. Dartmouth shot 52 percent from the field in the opening frame to the Hawk's 30. Ironically it was the Big Green who couldn't make their free throws despite hot shooting, going just 8-17 in the first half and 20 for 34 in the game. Overall, Dartmouth shot 43 percent to the Hawks 33 from the field. The Big Green were led by Biber with 14 points and Giovacchini and Elgin Fitzgerald had 12 each. UMES now kicks off the MEAC half of their season for a January 3, 2007 date with Norfolk State University. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 tip in Princess Anne. |
