U. OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE TO PLAY BIRDS OF ANOTHER FEATHER TUESDAY
Jan. 3, 2012
Bethlehem, Pa. —In its last non-conference game of the season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball team will travel to Patriot League leader Lehigh University Tuesday. The Hawks are 2-0 this season against Patriot League opponents having defeated American and Navy earlier in the season.
Lehigh enters the game 11-3 against the 3-10 UMES Hawks. The Mountain Hawks battled back early in the season against St. John’s to fall 78-73 in an ESPN2 televised game. The Hawks faced a tough Kansas State team as part of its 12-day road trip and trailed the Wildcats by just seven points entering halftime.
Most of the Hawks offensive production has come from its frontcourt play of Louis Bell, Ishaq Pitt and Percy Woods. Bell and Woods are averaging 10.2 points per game, while Pitt is adding 8.2 points per game.
Newcomer Ronald Spencer has averaged double figures (10.0 PPG) after making an appearance in two games this season (Air Force and Virginia). In Spencer’s debut at Air Force he posted 11 points and eight rebounds.
Spencer, a forward and sometimes center, gave the Hawk defense a jolt of energy that it had not seen in games prior to playing Air Force. UMES has given up a bulk of points inside the paint warranting more physical play from its interior.
The Hawk guard play has varied from game-to-game; at times being strong and other times leaving room for improvement. Woods is the team’s most dynamic guard and the Hawks take its cue from his on-court attitude. His ability to penetrate the lane with his speed helps draw defenders in and allows him to dish the ball, while also having a solid dribble and understanding of the game to know when to run which plays.
UMES will need for its guards to play in a sound fashion against Lehigh and demand that its backcourt keep the Lehigh interior from scoring a bulk of the Mountain Hawks points.
Tuesday’s game is set for a 7 PM tip-off. The game can be heard live on the Hawks Radio Network at www.UMESHawks.com.
