WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men's and Women's Basketball teams are set to begin a two-game swing to the Carolinas with a match-up against Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) tomorrow in the LJVM Coliseum. The Lady Hawks (6-6) come into the game riding a two-game winning streak, including an impressive 60-56 decision over American on Tuesday night and a 76-71 overtime thriller at home against Kent State last Sunday. Tiffany Reid (Philadelphia, Pa./National Christian Academy) and April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle H.S.) provide a nice one-two punch for UMES as they lead the team in every major statistical category, which includes scoring with 14.9 and 14.1 points per game respectively. Meanwhile, WSSU (0-10) enters the game in search of their first win of the season. The Lady Rams are coming off a loss at home to Alabama State back on December 29 and have not played a game since. Vontisha Woods leads the Lady Rams offense with 11.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. This marks the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game for the Lady Hawks, but it will not count in the official standings. Coach Fred Batchelor will look to pick up his fourth career victory against WSSU after beating them twice last season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Read tomorrow's game notes here. The Hawks (2-12) enter tomorrow's match-up in search of a win after having dropped three straight non-conference games, including an 86-50 decision to Nebraska last Friday. Freshmen Marc Davis (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) was named MEAC Rookies of the Week for his performance against the Cornhuskers and is the team's second leading scorer, averaging 11.1 points per game, while dishing out a team-high 2.93 assists per game.
WSSU (5-7) will be looking for their fifth consecutive home win after having dropped Columbia Union on Wednesday. The Rams are led by sophomore Brian Fisher with 10.5 points per game. Fisher is the only Ram player to average double-figures. This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools men's basketball programs, however; the game does not count in the official MEAC standings. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. or 20 minutes after the floor is cleared at the conclusion of the women's game.
