Jan. 13, 2003 10/31/2002 - UMES FIGHTING HAWKS TREAT THEMSELVES TO BASKETBALL TRICKS ON HALLOWEEN"
PRINCESS ANNE, MD- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Fighting Hawks went Trick or Treat on Halloween tonight and put on a display for Hawk fans. In the end the "gray squad" toppled the "maroon squad" 74-70, but it took overtime to do it. In a game that was very well officiated and was very evenly matched between the split rosters the crowd was treated to hard play, fancy passes and rim shaking dunks. Junior guard Tee Trotter led the maroon team with 17 points while Junior newcomers Terrance Stafford of the "gray squad" and Javes Wiggins of the "maroon squad" added 15 and 19 respectively. Wiggins grabbed a whopping 20 rebounds. Junior guard Ka'Reem Horton, returning from an injury last season, exploded for 21 points on the gray side. Coach Thomas Trotter who coached neither team and watched from the sidelines was happy with the display. "We learned a lot, but we have a lot to work on. I see some great things and some really inspiring things, but some stuff that we did tonight will have to be worked on in practice," he added. The Hawk fans were impressed and have a lot of expectations for the coming season. "We will see on the ninth of November in our first exhibition," said Coach Paris Parham of the winning side, "we will get a real idea of how the team plays when another team comes to town."
"This is a big win for Coach Parham," added Coach Brian Kusnierz of the 'maroon squad,' "it is the first time he has ever beat me coaching, usually he doesn't have a chance." The Hawk fans hope the players have as much competitive fire as the coaches.
