Jan. 13, 2003 11/23/2002 - "HAWKS CLAWED IN SEASON OPENER" EVANSTON, IL- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Fighting Hawks (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) came into Northwestern University tonight hoping to get a win over at team they have never defeated. The Hawks played the Wildcats even in the second half but could not overcome the 20 point half-time deficit. Junior Tee Trotter led all scorers with 16 points and six rebounds, a team high, while JUCO newcomers Terrance Stafford and Didier Socka added four points each. In a gym that is known for its difficult shooting and tight rims the Hawks could only muster a 27.8 % shooting percentage. The Wildcats shot 44.4 %. UMES won the turnover war committing only eight to NU's 17; however, Northwestern out rebounded the Hawks 48-26. The Wildcats were paced by Aaron Jennings who netted 16 points and had seven boards. Jitim Young dropped ten points and Winston Blake grabbed eight boards. Head Coach Thomas Trotter had mixed emotions about his Chicago homecoming, "This place has a reputation for being difficult to shoot in. It is the toughest gym to shoot in I know of. We couldn't hit a shot, but I was generally happy with how we took care of the ball and played defense. Northwestern's style of play will give a lot of teams some trouble. Tonight it gave us a lot."
The Hawks were defeated exactly two years ago by Northwestern when they only mustered 33 points. The Hawks hope to right the ship on November 30th when the host Elon University at 4:00 PM in the Hytche Center.
